GENDER CHAMPION CELL

Introduction:
To promote gender equityas guaranteed by Article 15 of the Indian Constitution, and increase outreach for creating an environment that fosters equal treatment, Government of India envisages engagement of Gender Champions in all schools and colleges across the country. Gender champions, both boys and girls above 16 years, are part of a joint initiative by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
2. Objective
A Gender Champion's role is to use an interdisciplinary approach to understand how societal and cultural gender constructions shape experiences. The goal is to foster gender sensitivity among youth and promote social norms that value girls and their rights.
3. Roles and Responsibilities of a Gender Champion
A Gender Champion's responsibilities include:
  • Guiding peers in integrating gender in all activities through discussions, debates, and competitions.
  • Engaging stakeholders in gender mainstreaming activities.
  • Identifying and addressing gender gaps in school/college activities.
  • Promoting the Gender Champion Club and undertaking innovative activities like creating a gender equity blog.
  • Organizing awareness programs on gender issues to influence behaviour change.
  • Organizing school/college events on the theme of gender equality.
  • Organizing exposure visits to public service institutions to facilitate knowledge about gender issues.
  • Popularizing helpline numbers among students.
  • Arranging for life skill education and guidance about public services.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of important government schemes, events, legislation, and court rulings.
  • Documenting best practices to measure behaviour change and displaying them through exhibitions and annual magazines.
